Viviana Luján participated in two sustainable finance events at the IUCN’s World Parks Conference (WPC) held in Sydney in November 2014.
- A full day workshop on sustainable finance for marine protected areas, organized by WWF-The Netherlands. This workshop addressed the main steps in preparing a sustainable financing strategy: assessing the financing needs, preparing financing plans and evaluating the feasibility of financing mechanisms.
- An interactive workshop at the Conservation Finance Pavilion. Here, she presented an innovative framework through which ecosystem services and beneficiaries from a particular ecosystem in a protected area can be pinpointed to reveal potential financing mechanisms for a protected area, and obstacles for the implementation or effectiveness of such mechanisms can be revealed. Although protected areas can be very different, in terms of their geographic location, level of protection, and financing needs, this approach offers a practical structure for protected areas to tackle key obstacles to generate financial support for their MPAs and identify opportunities to move towards sustainable financing.
