The Government of Belize is strengthening capacities in Natural Resources Valuation (NRV) to support strategic planning and management of natural resources in the country. Wolfs Company and the VU University Amsterdam are assisting this process by implementing a comprehensive NRV training program for government officials and representatives of organizations involved in natural resource management in Belize.
More than 20 practitioners have been part of the NRV training program, which kicked off with an introductory webinar held in March 2017. Thereafter, the participants became familiar with key concepts for NRV through a series of homework assignments, and gained in-depth knowledge to conduct NRV studies in a 1-week intensive course. In the final phase of the program, Wolfs Company is guiding training participants in the development of a pilot study on the socioeconomic value of Belize River’s ecosystems. The completion of the study is expected by December 2017.
The pilot study will be complemented with a hands-on methodological guide focused on ecosystem services identified as a priority for Belize through the training program. In addition to these products, the deliverables of this consultancy include a review of practices and approaches for NRV, a training module with materials for future capacity building activities and a sensitization workshop for stakeholders in Belize.
The training program on NRV has been funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) of UNDP, and commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment and Sustainable Development (MAFFESD).
